Choosing the Right Coworking Space: What to Look For

As a digital nomad, a good coworking space offers more than just Wi-Fi. It becomes your home base, community hub, and productivity zone. But it can also be a source of stress and lack of productivity if you don’t choose the best one for your needs.

Key things to look for in a coworking space

When choosing a coworking space, look for more than just fast Wi-Fi and a desk. Prioritize a location that’s convenient and well-connected, with a comfortable atmosphere that suits your working style. Think whether you prefer quiet zones or social areas. Reliable amenities like meeting rooms, phone booths, printers, and good coffee can make a big difference.

Check for flexible membership options, especially if you’re a digital nomad. And don’t forget about the social spaces. A good variety of spaces for both work and socialization can help you meet new people, and that always helps with motivation and happiness.

Must-Have Tools & Things to Have in Mind as a Digital Nomad in Spain

Productivity and Teamwork:

Workflow organization tools are vital. The best way to achieve your goals is to be organized, and the best way to stay organized is to write things down, prioritize and delegate.

It’s easier said than done, but there are tools that will make it so it’s easy as pie. Some of our favorites are Trello, for intuitive boards and information management; Asana and Monday, for task and workload management; and finally Notion, that will help you create your own pages, data bases, CRMs, calendars, questionnaires,… list is kinda endless.

Great Communication, specially if you work with a team, is something you shouldn’t ignore. Using WhatsApp is great, but Slack / Discord are great free and more professional options. Most people know Slack for work, but many startups and remote companies are using Discord nowadays too, so if you are organizing your team, you could consider it too.

Money and Safety as a Digital Nomad:

Use a VPN for secure browsing. Browsers like Opera and Brave offer free VPN options, but you can also use NordVPN / Surfshark.

Another vital thing to have in mind is banking. Revolut for international banking and fuss free foreign currency exchange, plus different membership tiers offer different perks to regular travelers, from lounge access to gym subscriptions.

Travel and Socialization for Remote Workers:

In the age of Netflix and ChatGPT, it may be tempting to stay home and live in a digital bubble, but the main appeal of being a Use tools for local exploration and making friends.

  • Google Maps: Again, something pretty obvious, but still helpful.
  • Meetup: Here you can find activities, social clubs or just groups of people with common interest meeting up randomly.
  • Enterticket and Fever: For the bests events in the city, from music to business.
  • Nomad List: Tips, resources and information for digital nomads, so they know what to expect when they land in a new place. They also organize events at different cities across the globe.
  • Going out: Yes, so this one isn’t really a tool, but it is one of the easiest and most obvious things you can do to meet people. Wherever you go, you are likely to find a cultural event, pub or club that will welcome you with open arms, specially if you know some of the local language (we can help you out with learning Spanish!). For example, in Valencia there are many pubs like St. Patricks that offer language exchange events, great to meet locals and fellow expats alike.

How to Stay Connected as a Digital Nomad Abroad in Spain

Valencia has solid infrastructure, but staying connected globally can take planning. Getting an eSIM (e.g., Saily) or a prepaid sim from local providers like Yoigo and similar companies can be a life saver. You could even consider a portable hotspot if traveling to more rural regions, you could even try Starlink if you really want to go off the grid.

Using coworking hubs like International Coworking Valencia to avoid the coffee shop Wi-Fi roulette (bad wifi, no space, hacking,…) is, like we’ve mentioned previously, a pretty useful option, not only for work but for  meeting people too.

Work-Life Balance and Remote Work in Valencia

Valencia offers a slower pace of life, that’s one of the reasons the annual Expat City Ranking places us as the top 1 best city to live in, which helps balance your hustle.

Enjoy the best of both worlds: the best beaches (we are the region with the most blue flags for a reason) and the most livable city. You could start your day with a thrilling run through Turia Park, and end it with a relaxing walk on the sand enjoying the sunset in the Malvarosa.

Plus, there’s always something going on. Use coworking social events to meet people without networking fatigue and make sure to block time for focused work with intentional breaks. You are here to work, but also enjoy yourself. So don’t forget to explore paella spots, rooftop bars, or weekend getaways to nearby Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid,… and if you visit us at International Coworking Valencia we can help you discover more of Spain with our organized activities and excursions.

Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa: How to Settle in Valencia

Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa, launched in May 2024, is designed for non-EU citizens who want to live in Spain while working remotely for a company or clients based outside the country. Whether you’re an employee or a freelancer, this visa offers a legal path to enjoy the Spanish lifestyle while continuing your international work.

To qualify, you’ll need to meet a few key requirements:

  • Professional background: Either a university degree or at least 3 years of experience in your field.
  • Remote work setup: You must have been working remotely for at least 3 months before applying.
  • Non-Spanish income: Your main employer or clients must be based outside Spain (freelancers can earn up to 20%from Spanish clients).
  • Financial means: You’ll need to show an income of at least €2,268/month (200% of Spain’s minimum wage), with additional income required if you’re bringing family.
  • Clean criminal record and valid health insurance (private or public, covering your stay in Spain).
  • NIE number: You must get this foreigner ID before applying.

Family members—spouses, partners, dependent children, and even dependent parents—can join you, as long as you provide proof of relationship and financial support.

Once approved, the visa is valid for up to one year, and you’re free to live in Spain legally without a residency card (though you can apply for one if staying longer).
